The First Ever Christmas Card
The First Ever Christmas Card
Designed by the artist John Calcott Horsley in 1843 (the same year Chrles Dickens created A Christmas Carol). Commissioned by Sir Henry Cole because he thought a picture postcard with a Christmas Greeting would be an acceptable & less time-consuming means of congratulating relatives, friends & colleagues. The design incorporates two scenes of charity flanking a central picture of a Victorian family raising a glass to the recipient of the card.
1000 of these cards were printed, of which 21 still exist
PLEASE NOTE: images on these Victorian Cards are quite grainy due to their age (doctoring the images would have removed some of their weird charm!)
This card is printed in-house onto premium quality 300gsm semi-glossy card, with a white envelope. It arrives 'naked' (free from plastic wrapping)
